Begining of Utsav
‘Lord Ganesha (Ganpati)’, the God of wisdom and prosperity is known as the first God (Prathmesh) in Hindu religion. He is the younger son of Lord Shiva and Parvati. The birth-day of Lord Ganesha is well-known as Ganesh Chaturthi. Ganesh Chaturthi kick-starts the post-monsoon season of festivals in the Hindu calender. The festival comes on the fourth day of the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada.



This 11-day festival starting with the installation of beautifully engraved (sculptured) Ganesh idols in colorfully decorated homes and mandapas (pendals). The mandapas has been depicted by religious themes or current events. The idols are worshipped with families and friends. enthusiastic spiritual atmosphere occurs everywhere.
This festival has special historical importance for Pune city. Here, in 1893, the great freedom fighter ‘Lokmanya’ Bal Gangadhar Tilak took historical decision and first time celebrated Ganesh festival at public level. This is 113rd year of celebrating public Ganesh festival. The public Ganesh festival has an extravaganza of dancing lights, animated mythological tableaux. Near about 4.5 lakh households in the city and more than 3000 public Ganesh mandals are celebrating the city’s biggest festival with fanfare and devotion.
In Pune, there are five Ganpati of Honour. They are as follows- First Ganpati of Honour : Kasba Ganpati, Second Ganpati of Honour : Tambadi Jogeshwari, Third Ganpati of Honour : Guruji Talim, Fourth Ganpati of Honour : Tulsibaug Ganpati and Fifth Ganpati of Honour : Kesariwada Ganpati. Shrimant Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati Mandal and Akhil Mandai Mandal are also worhhiped crores of people across Globe.
Today, the famous Shrimant Dagduhseth Halwai’s Ganesha idol was installed (Pratishtapana) by Pandit Sakhare Maharaj on special Muhurta at 11 am. The procession was started at 9am from Appa Balwant Square and reach the mandapa via Tilak Statue at Mandai

The First Ganpati of Honour – Kasba Ganpati’s procession was started at 9:30 am. It brought Ganesh’s idol from Patrya Maruti Square at Narayan Peth via Laxmi road, Appa Balwant Square. Ganesha’s idol was installed by Vishnu Maharaj Parnekar at 11:16 am.
Akhil Mandai Mandal’s Sharda Ganesha idol was installed by Deputy Mayor of Pune city Mr Nilesh Magar at sharp 11:30 am. The procession started at 9:30 am went via Tilak Statue at Mandai, Rameshwar Square.
Enthusiastic and spiritual atmosphere occurs everywhere during Ganesh festival.
